I’m incredibly proud to share with you my first Modus digital column as the 143rd President of RICS, and I’d like to use it as an opportunity to introduce myself and share my vision for RICS in 2025.
I was born in Wimbledon in the UK and my parents divorced when I was four. My dad wasn’t around much, and money was always tight, so my mum had to juggle looking after us while working two jobs to make ends meet. Despite this, she went on to have a fulfilling 25-year career as a secretary in both Houses of Parliament. Her work ethic has always been a great source of inspiration for me.
I have always been passionate about education, which stems from being fortunate to be awarded a government-assisted place at London’s Emanuel School, which covered all my fees. I had a great headmaster who believed in me and, when I told him that university wouldn’t be an option for me in my financial situation, he helped me get an interview with Wimpey Construction as a QS.
More than 35 years later – and after a few job changes, becoming a chartered surveyor and setting up my own business – I’m still loving my career as a QS and an RICS-accredited expert witness. My path has shown me that, despite my humble beginnings, a combination of opportunities and the support of others means I have been lucky enough to come a long way. I want this idea to be a key part of my tenure as President.
My term will therefore focus on two key priorities. First, attracting a diverse next generation. It’s a well-worn phrase, but there’s a skills shortage in many areas of our profession that urgently needs addressing. Building on my momentum as President Elect, I want to encourage more people to pursue careers in surveying, by visiting more RICS-accredited universities, and explore earlier opportunities to talk about built environment careers in primary and secondary schools. Beyond schools, I want to encourage returners, and career changers to join, both inside and outside the UK.
Second, I am committed to showcasing the vital role that RICS members play in shaping the world around us – from delivering sustainable buildings and ensuring safety in construction to valuing assets with integrity and highlighting the many other branches of our wide-ranging profession. RICS members are at the heart of creating a better built environment, which affects so many aspects of our society.
I look forward to engaging with members worldwide, hearing your stories and celebrating your achievements. Each month, I’ll be sharing updates, insights, and reflections in my Modus column.
I encourage you to follow along and join me in shaping the future of our Institution. Together, we can make 2025 a year of growth, impact, and inspiration for RICS and our profession.
